Michael Snow (1928-2023) is considered one of Canada’s most important artists and among the world’s foremost experimental filmmakers. His wide-ranging and multidisciplinary body of work explored the possibilities inherent in different mediums including film, painting, sculpture, photography, writing and music by way of a thorough investigation into the nature of perception.
This program will feature two of Snow’s best known films, Wavelength (1967) and New York Eye and Ear Control (1964). Both films treat music and sound as structural and compositional elements where audio is as important as the images shown. The former features a single, continuous electronic glissando of a pure sine wave that rises in pitch over the duration of the film while the latter features a free-jazz score performed by Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicia, Gary Peacock and Sunny Murrary - both to stirring, visceral effect.
